KILLINGS: Gowon demands arrest of Miyetti Allah leaders

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), on Saturday said that he was sad and disappointed with the way the current threatening security situation in the country is being handled.
He said that “security agencies should invite and question the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore who had threatened to unleash violence on Benue State and later justified the killings and their roles.”
The former head of state, who cautioned that if nothing urgent is done to address the security situation in the country that it could lead to a religious war, also called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to make more efforts to tackle the insecurity in Nigeria.
He stated this when he spoke at the Benue People’s House, Makurdi, where he visited Governor Samuel Ortom to commiserate with his government and the people of the state over the wanton killings and destruction of properties they have continued to suffer since January 1.
Noting that he was not in the country when two priests and 17 worshipers were killed in a Catholic church in Benue during morning mass, Gowon expressed the condolences of his ‘Nigeria Prays’ group to the governor.
“I am sad and worried at the religious dimension the killings are assuming .
“It is worrisome to see innocent people being killed. Government should make more efforts to tackle the insecurity situation in the country before it descends into a full religious war,” he said.
While he applauded the governor and the people of the state over the handling of the killings of their people, Gowon added that “for us to survive as a nation; we must learn to live together as one regardless of ethnicity or religion”
The state deputy governor, Benson Abounu, who represented the governor, appreciated Gowon and his group for commiserating with the people of the state as well as lending his voice to the call on the Federal Government to take decisive actions to end wanton killings in the state and other parts of the country.
