The Presidency on Thursday assured Nigerians that there is no need for apprehension over the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari. It, however, said as eager as the President wanted to be up and about, his doctors have advised him to take things slowly. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement he made available to journalists. Shehu explained that Buhari’s absence at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, was a last minute decision; otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance. “As eager as he is to be up and about, the President’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago,” he said. A 22-year-old man, Subaru Folawiyo, who allegedly gang-raped a 25-year-old girlfriend with others still on the run, was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Folawiyo, who resides in Surulere area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape. The prosecutor, Sgt. Ibijoke Akinpelu, told the court that the accused with others still at large committed the offences on April 4 at about 3.52 p.m. at Block 4, Flat 2, Off Bello Road, Surulere. Akinpelu alleged that Folawiyo and his accomplices gang-raped the girl. He said the accused was later apprehended after the girl reported the case at the Police Station. The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 260 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The Magistrate, Mrs.A.F. Adeeyo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until May 31 for trial. (NAN)

Scientists have made a major breakthrough in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer as they unveil a special drug to that effect. A team of British scientists have designed a prototype drug which could stop breast cancers from growing and spreading, The Punch reports. Working with laboratory mice, the team found that a protein called lysyl oxidase (LOX) plays an important role in helping breast cancer to grow and spread. The scientists have also designed a prototype drug that blocks LOX and in mice is able to slow down the disease. They now hope to develop a similar medicine suitable for human patients and test it in clinical trials.
